Still needs a substantial amount of tuning up (and some body work), but it’s still so good. 8.6MPG the last tank with a carb that’s all wrong and no timing beyond base until halfway up the rev range (and a potentially really-worn cam). Even still, it runs better every day as things re-adjust after essentially being parked one day then sitting for years.
Travel for work all next week, so things will be quiet from my end.

Green is the most underrated car colour.

I've always kind of lusted after a four door Chevelle. Maybe because I think I could somehow justify it as a family car.

Agreed. It’s about on par with a very dark blue metallic.

That beast looks awesome!

Those ralley wheels always look fantastic. That's one handsome car.

8.6 MPG? You just reminded me I haven't been to test and tune night at Atlanta drag way for a while.

Slap a cowl induction hood on it and some NOS white rally stripes and you’re good.

I bet that sounds and smells great. 350ci or something else?

An SS-style cowl induction hood would be pretty awesome... though I may be distracted making it open and close.

It sounds really good, humorously enough the poor-running-state means that it idles like it has some crazy cam. The smell is okay, it’s really rich and burns a decent amount of oil.
It has a very well worn (100k miles never opened except for valve cover gaskets - I have the full service history from the original owner) 307 in it, which will be warmed over in the interrim (already put headers on, will be doing intake/carb soon, probably a cam, hopefully won’t need a re-ring) and eventually replaced with a 350 that’s been stroked out to 383 (or a blueprint crate 383 stroker, which is that but warrantied and pre-dyno’ed).

oooooh man the most financially irresponsible option sounds great lol (blueprint 383). I like original engines though, part of that old car soul is definitely lost once you do a swap
![]() 08/26/2016 at 23:29 |

It’s hardly a crazy swap, you could get this same car with a 425HP big block out of the showroom if you wanted. Replacing a tired old smallblock with a fresh one doesn’t seem too radical :)
Financially it isn’t too bad either - for what it’d cost to stroke and build that engine you’re getting close to what they charge!
Either way it won’t be for a while, I’ve got a lot of other things going on, and the whole rest of the drivetrain will need built to handle nearly 500ft-lb before the swap happens. Until then I’ll play with the 307, if the compression test (which I’m holding off on since it sat so long, I want it to run back in) comes back totally crap I’ll probably end up doing a simple rebuild for now.

YepI understand your point! A 454 would be absolutely nuts lol. And really funny in a sedan. There was some GM sedan on craigslist with a similar setup for $4500, and it had 30k miles or something ridiculous like that. Totally mint, really wanted it.

switch to one of the bolt-on fuel injection systems, like Holley’s Terminator. There are a few companies that make them. fuel economy could potentially double. really simple install

No fool injection here! I like carbs. I’m all about EFI in a car that should have it, but having tuned both carbs and EFI system from scratch, I’ll take a carb any day.
Those EFI systems also cost a ton.
